# How Nosto modifies your theme

{% hint style="info" %}
Attention: This is our old approach, and not available anymore for merchants who install Nosto in May 2024 or later!
{% endhint %}

Upon installing the Nosto for Shopify app, choosing a theme to edit, Nosto amends the core theme file called `layout/theme.liquid` and amends it to include the Nosto tagging snippet. To better understand snippets and the Shopify theme structure, we recommend reading [Shopify's theme development guide](https://help.shopify.com/themes/development/templates#snippets).

## Amendments to include the Nosto tagging

Nosto amends the core theme file (`layout/theme.liquid`) to include the Nosto semantic markup snippet using the following include:

```
{% render 'nosto-tagging' %}
```

A corresponding snippet file named `nosto-tagging.liquid` is uploaded to the `snippets` directory of your theme. The snippet contains all the Liquid templates needed to render markup that gives Nosto insights into the page context.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.nosto.com/shopify/features/outdated-asset-api-approach/how-nosto-modifies-your-theme.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
